Does the app also update the OS?

I updated the iPad version of the HE app and was able to automatically update the firmware without a cable.  That is a nice feature, although it was slow.  Can the app also update the OS or does that require a PC and cable still?

  Along the same lines, is it possible to update the OS without a Windows computer specifically?
